Sherborne Paddock Gardens
Abbotsbury Swan Maze
A Cottage Garden
In October 2005, Mr. Alan Titchmarsh officially opened the first new public garden in Sherborne for 100 years commemorating 1300 years since the founding of Sherborne Abbey and town. The garden, which was landscaped by The Company of Landscapers under the direction of Alan Dodge came to fruition after eight months of hard work.
This unique construction of locally grown and harvested willow, precision built to an exacting design, was conceived to add an extra attraction to the world famous Swannery at Abbotsbury. The Company of Landscapers had to learn a new skill – basket weaving – and work within a specific time frame to ensure that the willow poles and whips would ‘strike’.to make the maze impenetrable and to mask the route to its centre.
